Fed: Lacross champ and AFL coach's sister enters politics
ADELAIDE, Aug 26 AAP - Former world champion lacrosse player Jenny Williams will stand
for the Australian Democrats in the marginal federal seat of Hindmarsh at the next election.
"I checked out all the political parties: the Liberals are not compassionate and Labor
doesn't let you exercise your own brain and conscience," Ms Williams, a member of one
of South Australia's best-known sporting families, said in a statement.
"I have very deliberately chosen the Democrats because they are the best party for
me and for Australia.
"I want to make Hindmarsh a better place and there are lots of issues I want to tackle,
but in particular I want to promote active, healthy lifestyles for families and children."
Ms Williams has won an extensive list of sporting honours in lacrosse, touch football,
cricket, Australian rules football and soccer.
She was a member of the 1986 world champion lacrosse team.
Democrats senator Natasha Stott Despoja said Ms Williams was a natural Democrat.
"She has that combination of compassion, commonsense and independence that is the essence
of our party," she said.
Ms Williams, 50, is a physical education teacher, her husband is a general practitioner
and they have a 14-year-old daughter.
She is the sister of Mark Williams, coach of the Port Adelaide AFL team.
