SA: Car companies agree to recall jacks

ADELAIDE, April 15 AAP - Carmakers Audi, Daewoo and Proton have agreed to fix problemswith the jacks supplied with a range of their cars following a safety crackdown by theAustralian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

The commission found recently that the jacks supplied by Audi and Proton failed tocome with the right warning labels and safe use instructions provided for in the TradePractices Act.

It also found jacks provided with some Daewoo cars failed to have the right warning labels.

All three companies had since agreed to recall the jacks involved.

Proton and Audi would provide replacement warning labels and instructions while Daewoowould provide new warning labels.

Audi had also undertaken to rectify some jack performance problems.

"It is good that Proton, Audi and Daewoo cooperated to resolve this important matter,"

said ACCC chairman Alan Fels.

"But it is disappointing that such a high level of non-compliance with a mandatorystandard was detected."

As well as contacting owners about the jack problems, Audi, Proton and Daewoo willalso issue a service bulletin to all dealers and post a safety warning notice on theirwebsites for the next 30 days.

Last year the ACCC took BMW to the Federal Court alleging it had supplied vehicleswith jacks and owner manuals that did not comply with mandatory standards.

That action is being contested by BMW.
